There is so much that I want to say about this book, but, forgive me, I don't know where to begin...
I guess I'll start with the fact that this is a very well-written novel - so well, in fact, that it caught me off guard. I have never heard of this publisher before purchasing this book, but will not only keep an eye out for more works by the writer but on the company as well. From the cover to the content, this is a very professional work.
In my opinion, Cadaver Island is a genre-blending read which doesn't lack depth, detail, or action. The characters are all well-developed, from the protagonist to her pets. I found myself actually caring what happens and how it happens to whom. I don't understand how this book has so few reviews! I mean, creatures from the past, cyborgs, the dead, this is a suspenseful fantasy that had me turning page after page.
I am very much looking forward to what Kevin has to offer in the future. Cadaver Island brings forth all the elements and has manufactured a great read. Buy. This. BOOK!
If an Irwin Allen Movie and a multi-level survival video game had a love child, Cadaver Island would be it. It's a four fold plot you have here one part quest for valuable items that have been stolen, two parts escape from the undead coupled with various traps and several monstrous menaces, added to an initial race against time to save an innocent man from execution. This book is a hodgepodge mash up of fantasy, horror, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic action-adventure, you-name-it; all molded into one big package. The changes of terrain and terror are sudden and dizzying, and there are some interesting twists on standard descriptive terms. Breakneck action stands toe-to-toe with endearing camaraderie. Let me warn you, the smallest member of the crew steals every scene he's in, and deserves a Boy Scout badge for preparedness.
So if you want something incredibly unusual and gruesomely chaotic, Cadaver Island might be your book. This first novel can proudly take its place beside most of today's New Pulp offerings.
My one-star caveat is I don't care for bubbling snot or graphically descriptive acts of urination used as plot devices. If you can overlook that, and get past the accumulations of maggots, intestines, and rotting flesh, you're good to go with this one. Be warned it ends in a very abrupt cliffhanger, so don't expect everything to be resolved. Very tricky of Mr. Rodgers, to get us to purchase the sequel to find out what comes next!
Cadaver Island is a unique story in that it is both sci-fi and horror intermingled together. It is Kevin's first book and he does a more than admirable job with his epic story about a cybernetic girl, her robot dog, the Dr. who saved her life by transforming her into a cyborg as well as several other pieces to the puzzle including her boyfriend who is being held captive by a villain in the story.
But he is not the only villain involved. In this dystopian future shown in `Cadaver' there are several monsters of sorts seen running around making life miserable for our heroes. Everything from blood hungry pterodactyls to mysteriously reanimated dead former priests with vendettas against the living come after our heroine and her compatriots.
It's a roller coaster ride to be sure. But it's not without its bumps, as minor as they may be. Don't get me wrong I liked this book quite a bit, it's still a five star read.
But there are a few things I was slightly put off by. The use of the words `esophagus' and `bile' repeatedly and at least two occurrences of a character getting so nervous or frightened that the phrase `urine sprayed out of his penis' was used. I felt those were uncalled for myself.
The other minor complaint I had was that I felt the characters were a bit too stiff around each other. Everyone seemed very prim and proper and almost Victorian in the way they addressed one another. Now perhaps that is what Kevin was going for, I don't know, but it just seemed a bit unnatural to me.
All in all though, this was a great adventure where the main characters had danger and death breathing down their necks throughout most of the book while they are on the run. It`s just the first book in a trilogy and I really look forward to the next two.
This is a great first effort and if you're looking for a dystopian horror/sci-fi book, this is the one to go for.
